Abstract
Polymer fibers, particularly electrospun resorbable nanofibers, are attracting growing attention in biomedical applications because of their biocompatibility, biodegradability, and outstanding structural properties. Resorbable nanofibers demonstrated unlimited potentials as cell regeneration and wound healing scaffolds capable of encapsulating and controlling the release of drugs and/or bioactives. Building on such success, newer specialized biomedical applications are emerging based on advanced nanofibrous resorbable scaffolds that act as not only biologically passive physical templates but also as bioactive structurally enhanced cell regeneration/drug delivery matrices. Composite nanofibers synergizing the favorable structural and functional properties of multiple components provide a platform of matrices for such applications. These are usually composed of a synthetic polymer matrix and a distinct dispersed phase(s) consisting of natural polymer nanofibers, bioactive macromolecules, inorganic or metal nanoparticles, carbon nanostructures, or drug nanocarriers. Composite nanofibers can be formed by phase blending during electrospinning or by surface modification of preformed nanofibers. Programmed delivery of drugs encapsulated in the continuous or dispersed phase(s) of the composite can be achieved by structurally mediated or stimuli-responsive mechanisms. In this chapter, different types of resorbable composite polymer fibers together with their general preparation, in vitro characterization methods and in vivo performance are reviewed and their biomedical applications and future perspectives highlighted.
