Abstract

Matthew Horrocks is Assistant Professor of Mental Health and Psychological Therapies at the University of Nottingham. He introduces Cognitive Behavioural Therapy training.

You might not know this, but Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is actually not just one approach to counselling and psychotherapy – CBT is, in fact, an umbrella term covering a range of related, but different, approaches, which are all based on psychological theory and research, and the idea that our thoughts, feelings, behaviours, and how our bodies respond, are all connected.

Examples of approaches under the umbrella of CBT include cognitive therapy, which focuses on how someone thinks; behavioural therapy, which focuses on how someone behaves in relation to certain trigger factors; and newer forms of CBT, such as acceptance and commitment therapy, or schema focused therapy, which focus on how a person responds in relation to their thoughts, feelings, behaviours, and the contexts they live, experience, and exist within.

In addition to being based on psychological theory and research, and the connections between thoughts, feelings, behaviours, and bodily responses, all CBT approaches are collaborative. That means that the counsellor and client work together in a spirit of joint team-working and problem solving. All CBT approaches also clearly encourage clients and counsellors to collect data to see if the ideas tested out in CBT can make a difference
