Abstract

In this paper, a study of the fault-tolerance and demagnetisation of a high-performance aircraft propulsion motor is investigated. The motor is proposed with either three or four sets of three-phase windings, while maintaining the same magnetic and thermal design. The design and performance of each motor are evaluated and presented. A study on the performance of the motor in the case of a single-phase or a three-phase group loss is performed. Furthermore, the reduction in output power due to phase loss is compensated by an increase in the phase current scheme. Finally, the PM demagnetisation under severe fault and temperature conditions is considered. The results are validated through an FE transient simulation. The paper presents a robust motor design against faulty and severe operating conditions.
