Abstract
This chapter focuses on the Pulmonata, gastropods belonging to the clade Heterobranchia. It explains that the pulmonates include the large majority of land snails and slugs, as well as many freshwater snails and a few small families of estuarine and shallow-water marine slugs and snails. It provides a summary of major taxonomic groupings within Pulmonata including their habitat, number of species, and earliest fossil record. It also outlines future directions of research in order to better understand the Pulmonata phylogeny.
