Abstract
This chapter is about the anticipation of Top Gun: Maverick as a reboot. The focus, quite purposefully, is on the reboot before it was released or the momentum of advance marketing had begun to build. While Thomas Elsaesser has likened the arrival of a blockbuster to the turbulence of a weather front, this chapter considers the more gradual changes in atmospheric pressure that precede the Hollywood reboot; it is about the tease, the rumour, and the anticipation of the reboot as discursive project. Contributing to work on the paratextual constellations that prefigure media events, I focus on the period in the mid-2010s leading up to the first official publicity still for Top Gun: Maverick.
