L'atlante inedito di Chierici: gli albi e le carte di distribuzione dei ritrovamenti preistorici nel contesto europeo

Abstract

At his death in 1886, Gaetano Chierici was preparing an Atlante della paletnologia del Reggiano (Atlas of the prehistory of the province of Reggio Emilia), which he probably intended should include his unpublished Albo of 14 lithographic plates of significant finds (1881), one or more archaeological maps (perhaps his 1876 map – on display in his museum -, perhaps the 5 maps he presented at the third international conference of Geography held at Venice in 1881) and maybe also his ideal stratigraphy of the province (presented at the Expo in Turin in 1884 and also on display in his museum). This paper contextualises Chierici 1881 album and 1876 map in the light of international initiatives and publications, and demonstrates that Chierici was a full participant in the international debates in Europe of his time.
