Abstract

A digital platform is an expansible codebase based on programmable systems, which provides
a shared module that interoperates with software systems and an interactive interface (Tiwana
et al. 2010). Although digital platforms enabled and supported by information technologies
have been increasingly applied in various sectors in the recent decade especially during the
Covid-19 pandemic, how they can be deployed to promote and support the transition to circular
economy is still unclear. Therefore, our research aims to address this important gap by
providing a systematic review of the literature related to the circular economy and digital
platforms over the past ten years (2010-2020) and presenting future research directions. We
found that digital platforms have been extensively used in ten industries: sharing economy,
social media, labour, healthcare, third-party payment, crowdfunding, lending, e-commerce,
tourism, and food. As one would expect, due to the high diversity of these industrial sectors,
literature exhibits different characteristics and trends. Overall, digital platforms help achieve
circular economy goals by reducing, relocating, and reutilising wastes through enhanced
information exchange, improved efficiency, and effectiveness of operations of the supply
network actors, and improved co-innovativeness
