Abstract

According to assorted popular conspiracy theories, the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, were orchestrated not by members of al-Qaeda but by the United States government; Princess Diana’s death was the result not of a tragic accident but of a secret plot concocted by the British Monarchy; government-run water treatment programs are designed not simply to provide potable drinking water but to spike it with chemicals intended to control or kill unsuspecting citizens.
