Collaboration is of utmost importance for dynamic and complex environments with multiple interfaces and interdependencies between system elements and humans. Collaboration enables effectively working systems where many people provide timely feedback, and problems become visible and are addressed. On the other hand, the effectiveness of collaboration can be enhanced in many ways. Among them, visual management (VM), a close-range, sensory communication strategy relying on easy-to-understand sensory devices is important in terms of creating transparent environments with an increased self-management capacity of people for collaboration. With the adoption of lean management in the form of lean construction, VM has diffused more in the architecture, engineering, construction, and operation (AECO) industry However, there is a gap in the literature in terms of compiling the theoretical and practical aspects of VM from a distinct collaboration perspective. Therefore, through a synthesis of the key literature, this chapter outlines the theoretic bases of VM, underlying its potential for inducing collaboration alongside VM’s need for collaboration for its effective implementation. The chapter concludes with collaborative VM examples used in design, construction, operations and manufacturing in the AECO industry.
