Abstract
Arts-Based Educational Research Narratives of Academic Identities: Perspectives From Higher Education makes a unique contribution to the arts-based educational research (ABER) field, by focusing on the complexities of academic identities in higher education. This edited volume explores how academic identities can be understood and developed through ABER methods and ways of knowing. It presents innovative insights demonstrating ABER’s role in critiquing and shaping identity narratives amidst diverse challenges in higher education. The book is distinctive in spotlighting insights and approaches from South Africa and catalysing critical ABER conversations in which Southern voices take the lead. This emphasis fosters a valuable dialogue between Southern and Northern scholarly perspectives, with contributions from Canada and the USA enriching the discourse. The book’s first part comprises personal-professional stories from scholars in Canada, the USA, and South Africa, highlighting the transnational evolution and spread of ABER initiatives. The second part features original research from South African scholars, offering fresh, multiperspective visions at the nexus of arts-based research, narratives, and academic identities. This section emphasises ABER’s role in shaping academics’ self-concepts and transforming higher education pedagogical spaces and leadership paradigms. It illustrates the dynamic nature of educator-researchers who use artistic methods such as visual art, metaphorical inquiry, collage, letter writing, poetic reflection, and dramatic knowing to navigate and reshape their professional environments. The narratives underscore ABER’s potential as a reflective and progressive force in educational research and social innovation, capable of navigating and elucidating complex social realities. Overall, the book argues that the arts are crucial to redefining academic identities in a complex educational landscape.
