Abstract
In this entry, we define adaptive leadership theory, discuss its origins and limitations, and present several possible applications in the modern workplace. Organizations today face significant challenges due to globalization, increased competition, increased accountability from stakeholders, and the need for innovation. Because the external business environment is constantly changing, leaders must learn new ways of operating and mobilize their people across the organization to change their minds and behaviors to thrive in new business environments. Leaders also need to change their own long-term behavioral patterns when needed, helping members of the organization to change their own behavior while managing the stress and uncertainty of change. Considering this, readers will understand why they need to consider adaptive leadership in the context of the new hybrid workplace arrangements at different levels of the organization and not just the upper echelons.
