Abstract

This chapter provides information on the type of reinforcing fibres commonly used in polymer composites. Inorganic and organic fibres are described along with general information on their manufacture, applications, and representative properties. Suitable fibre coatings are described for the different fibre types, as are the processed fibre forms and discontinuous fabrics that the fibres are converted into to provide easy-to-handle materials to facilitate composite manufacturing. Finally, consideration is made of the need for sustainability and the available recycling methods used to recover reinforcing fibres from end-of-life composite components.
