Abstract

As the most populous country in the world, the People’s Republic of China (PRC, otherwise known as mainland China) has an estimated 40 million lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) residents. In a country where homosexuality has only recently been decriminalized (in 1997) and depathologized (in 2001), the LGB community is faced with both opportunities and challenges. This chapter presents an overview of the LGB issues in the contemporary PRC. Following a brief history of same-sex intimacy in China, several key issues are discussed, including the law, health, media, and the community. The complicated processes of LGB identity and community formation are examined with an emphasis on historical and cultural traditions as well as contemporary issues and current trends.
