In previous chapters, I have discussed the role of the record for replication in architecture, its accuracy and its importance in the face of disasters. I then focused on Chile, presenting the heritage areas before and during their latest reconstruction processes after the major earthquakes that affected them.
In this chapter, I present the 3D-laser-scanning of the heritage villages of Tarapacá, Zúñiga and Lolol, as documented in 2013. I introduced this recording method in Chapter 2 and explained it further in Chapter 3 when applied to post-destruction situations. Here, I will show its application to the case studies, further exploring its extent and possible impacts as a method of analysis complemented by the reconstruction perception of inhabitants.
In heritage studies, documents, photographs, drawings, models, and files of any type are considered evidence that can help establish accurate versions of a building within a period of time. When documents are non-existent or scattered, the physical status of the building becomes the evidence. This is the case of dwellings in Chilean historic areas, with constructions that are the best proof of their own history, despite having been intervened in – probably several times – due to earthquakes and subsequent rebuilding.
In the second part of this chapter, I introduce the idea of recording through time. This attempts to demonstrate that 3D-laser-scanning can be an efficient post-earthquake record and design tool; that records used over time can accurately reveal the constant change after earthquake-related destructions and reconstructions experienced by Chilean heritage areas. The record is relevant as snapshots in time that help these changes be perceived and analysed, potentially informing new re-construction processes.
