Abstract

Women are more at risk from men who are generally violent or men with personality disorders than men who are only violent in the home. In incidents perpetrated by both generally violent men or men with personality disorders, the violence is more likely to be severe and even escalate to life threatening violence and homicide. Research has established that different types of family violence often co-occur concurrently or across generations consecutively. This is especially the case for spousal abuse and child maltreatment. A multi-sector, interdisciplinary approach is the most effective way of working together to promote children's rights to grow and develop in a safe family environment free from violence and provide care and protection to children. This requires interventions at all levels of the child's environment: the parents, the family, the community; and society in general.
