Which intra-articular injection is effective and safe for osteoarthritis?

Zhang, Weiya

Authors

Abstract

Intra-articular (IA) injection of corticosteroid (IACS) has been recommended for people with osteoarthritis (OA) when their pain cannot be controlled by nonsurgical treatments or when they have contraindications to oral analgesics.1,2 However, recent randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and real-world observational studies have found that repeated IACS may be detrimental to the treated joint cartilage.3,4 Several other IA interventions have also been developed and evaluated in RCTs, including IA hyaluronic acid (IAHA), IA homeopathy (IAHP), IA platelet-rich plasma (IAPRP), and other IA autologous products.
