Abstract

The British Film Institute (BFI) has been a central institution within both the British film industry and London as a media city for nearly 100 years. In this interview, Sarah Currant, Melanie Hoyes and Emma Smart discuss the BFI’s relationship with the city and the wider UK. This includes how the BFI engages with multiple stakeholders (the film industry, the UK government, academics, teachers and the general public) and how its physical presence at the South Bank in London acts as both a vital gateway and a barrier for those stakeholders. Currant, Hoyes and Smart explore how this connects with wider initiatives across the BFI to improve diversity not only within the organisation but also in the British film industry more broadly.
