Abstract

This article examines the relationship between the notions of cinéma-monde and translation, with a particular focus on subtitling. The article provides a discussion of the semionarrative nature of subtitles specifically in the context of cinéma-monde, argues that subtitled films constitute hybrid spaces where languages come into contact, and that through this intermingling produce a text that is more than the sum of its parts. Subtitles open up spaces where translingual writing emerges, which in turns has important implications on the way we think of translation and of its relationship with creative processes. The article then uses the four principles identified by Marshall (2012) to examine ways in which subtitles are used in cinéma-monde films.
