Abstract
In this introductory chapter, we first explain the keywords crucial to our analysis, theorization and discussion, including queerness, Chineseness and contemporary art. We then move on to a brief overview of the key chapters and themes in the book, which is contextualized in the Chinese avant-garde art movement, feminist art practices and transnational queer movement, as well as international exhibition and curating cultures. These material and historical contexts have played a key role in the emergence and development of contemporary queer Chinese art in multiple forms, styles and media, and with local, regional and global ramifications.
