Abstract

Since its development, Learning by Design has successfully guided instructional programs for a variety of subjects, including second language literacy, in elementary, middle, and high schools in Australia. The framework has been significant in offering educators tools to tailor instruction for socially and culturally diverse students. This chapter examines its theoretical underpinnings and some of the projects that it has guided. In addition, it introduces the concept of “Spanish heritage learner,” focusing on the literacy needs of the students who can be classified as such. Next, this chapter discusses the reasons why, based on heritage learners’ needs, Learning by Design seems to be the most appropriate methodology for the development of their literacy in Spanish. The final section presents the works included in the volume.
