Topographical art and historical geography: amateur English representations of Ligurian landscape in the early nineteenth century

Abstract

Since the 1970s scholars have studied representational landscape art to examine changing social conditions, the relationship between landscape and power, and as a source for interpreting past landscapes. Landscape and topographical art if carefully placed in its historical, social and cultural contexts can provide important insights into the way that land has been understood and managed (BARRELL, 1983; COSGROVE, DANIELS, 1988; COSGROVE, 2008; MITCHELL, 1994). There has recently been a resurgence in interest in studying topographical art. This had been encouraged by the rapid improvement in webbased access to images which formerly languished unseen in archives and collections. Probably the best example is the opening up of the huge collection of topographical materials held by the British Library.
