Abstract

This article argues that the title 'Good Men and Women' sometimes attributed to 'heretics' in southern France in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries is no less accurate or uncontroversial than the label 'Cathar'. This is because it is too widely applied to high-ranking people to be indicative of anything but elite status, and in any case is not used as often in the sources for heresy as historians sometimes assume.
