Evaluation of technologies and products for psychosocial intervention and support for and with people living with dementia

Abstract

This chapter covers various techniques and methods used to evaluate designs produced collaboratively in the ‘Designing for people with Dementia’ (MinD) programme (MinD, 2023). It extends these by consideration of a broader set of tools for formative evaluations, as used during the process of prototype co-design, and reviews summative evaluation techniques that can be used to assess the endpoint of design. The aim of MinD was to create new technologies and other products such as collaborative board games and software applications with the primary focus on facilitating improved social engagement and autonomy, and to support mindful activity and emotional well-being. This fits with a psychosocial outlook on health and well-being and attempts to embed an ethos of co-design. The Activities, Internal World and Relationships (AIR) model developed in the MinD programme is introduced. The chapter also mentions scales to measure the outcome of psychosocial interventions in dementia and more general behavioural models, technology adoption models, implementation readiness and the role of non-functional requirements in the success of design projects.
