Biography Dr Craig J Sturrock received his PhD in microbial ecology from the University of Abertay Dundee in 2002. In 2004, he started using X-ray Computed Tomography to investigate the influence of soil microbes of soil structural development within the SIMBIOS research group. Craig joined The University of Nottingham in 2010 where he is now co-director of The Hounsfield Facility, a dedicated X-ray imaging research facility for rhizosphere research. His research focuses on developing methodologies to enable high resolution quantification of the soil-plant -microbe ecosystem ranging from micro-scale changes in soil structure to the quantification of plant root system architecture. A major part of his work is the development of novel image analysis techniques to characterise heterogeneous materials. These techniques have been applied to collaborative projects with materials science, engineering, veterinary medicine and food science leading to the publication of over 50 papers in 5 years.
