Abstract

In this chapter, disasters are introduced as agents of built heritage change. It looks at previous reconstruction efforts and how the documents informed them – especially rebuilding as replica. It establishes the link between the record and rebuilding as a response to destruction, focusing on seismic areas where this link is recurrent due to earthquakes. This leads to further enquiry as to the authenticity of these operations, but also to explore other potential uses of the record for risk management and damage assessment, leading to a discussion over building techniques and social perception of historical assets affected by the damage and destruction produced by earthquakes.
