Abstract
On the 1st of July 2024, the Responsible Generative AI for SMEs in the UK and Africa (RAISE) project hosted its inaugural workshop, bringing together small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) from the United Kingdom and Africa. The workshop focused on exploring the integration of generative artificial intelligence (AI) into business services and products. It provided a platform for SMEs to discuss the challenges they face, share insights, and propose mitigation strategies as they navigate the complexities of adopting generative AI systems. The workshop underscored the need for sector-specific AI guidelines, and more accessible tools to help SMEs navigate the ethical, technical, and strategic challenges of AI integration. As the RAISE project moves forward, these insights will inform the development of practical, actionable guidance for SMEs to integrate generative AI responsibly and sustainably. The workshop also sets the stage for future collaboration and knowledge sharing among SMEs, positioning them to harness the potential of generative AI while managing the associated risks and challenges.
