Abstract

This chapter serves as an introduction to the volume, establishing the foundation for examining the role of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in second language (L2) education within the context of multiliteracies. The chapter begins by defining key GenAI concepts, followed by an overview of existing research on GenAI-supported L2 learning, highlighting reported affordances, limitations, and instructional challenges. The subsequent sections revisit the core principles of the pedagogy of multiliteracies and the related framework Learning by Design, emphasizing their significance in harnessing GenAI to promote equity and inclusivity in L2 education. Finally, the chapter provides an overview of the volume's contents.
