Abstract

This paper challenges the idea that St Patrick had little influence beyond Ireland before the tenth century. By surveying evidence for the spread of Patrick’s name, story and writings in Anglo-Saxon England and Merovingian and Carolingian Francia (c.600–900), it demonstrates that by the tenth century at the very latest, Patrick was a well-known figure outside Ireland, not merely as a name but as an object of veneration and a model for evangelisation.
