Abstract

Mathematical reasoning has increasingly been playing a central role in curricula around the world but has been a focus of research in mathematics education for many years. In 2018, the OECD revised the PISA mathematics assessment framework to explicitly include mathematical reasoning as a subdomain. Whilst mathematical reasoning has been a core part of the mathematics framework for PISA since its inception, this is the first time that it has been measured directly. In this paper we examine how mathematical reasoning is conceptualised within the PISA mathematics framework and its relationship to the conceptualisation in mathematics education research. We also present an analysis of how different countries and jurisdictions performed in this new subdomain, and the relationships between performance in this subdomain and the other process subdomains assessed in PISA.
