Cost, rate, and robustness
Hancock, Steven; Harper, Lee
Abstract
This chapter outlines the most important considerations for the economic evaluation of composites, as assessing both cost and performance in parallel is critical for designing and manufacturing efficient applications. The cost of raw materials is often considered foremost when planning the substitution of composites materials for metals, but it is essential that the cost of manufacturing is also taken into consideration to deliver the required production volume cost-effectively. This chapter provides a guide on how to set up a technical cost model and what to look for when selecting an appropriate manufacturing technology for series production. Examples are included that demonstrate why cost modelling is important throughout the product development process and how it can provide insight for planning and strategy development.
