Abstract

Young people are important consumers with many products being specifically targeted at them. They can have considerable independent in their food choice and purchases. It is during childhood that many broader attitudes and beliefs are acquired that will go on to shape adult dietary behaviour and healthy or unhealthy lifestyles. Work currently in progress aims to examine knowledge, beliefs and attitudes of young people aged between 6 and 16 towards various food safety issues. In particular, attitudes towards food chemicals in all stages of food production will be explored. Their perceived advantages and disadvantages will be assessed. Furthermore, the perceived usefulness of different sources of information will be elicited. Results from preliminary investigations will be described. Implications for food choice and future educational material will be discussed.
