Abstract

This chapter explores the communication within the environment before moving onto how the environment can be utilised to support communication where it is argued that open-ended resources and possibility-rich spaces are highly effective in enabling communication. It argues that the environment is also a powerful communicator in itself. The learning environment affords opportunities for children and adults to communicate listen and think together in a wide range of ways. Thinking and communicating can be perceived as a self-perpetuating loop where we create, adapt and extend thinking whilst in the process of communicating it. The enormous range of modes of communication used by a child can be overlooked when considering communication from an educational perspective. Representation within communication is intrinsically bound with context and the environment is particularly essential within the development of communication with regards to representation. Creating environments which maximise the possibilities for communication and are conducive to all modes of communication can be challenging.
