Abstract

Pregnancies in women with diabetes are associated with increased perinatal morbidity and mortality, even when the baby is structurally normal. The pathophysiology of this is poorly understood and likely to be multifactorial. The goal of surveillance is to identify fetuses at risk, in order to intervene in a timely and appropriate fashion, to reduce perinatal morbidity and mortality. None of the currently available surveillance techniques have been proven to predict the fetuses at risk or prevent poor outcome in the setting of a diabetic pregnancy.
