Biography I grew up in Northumberland in the north-east of England. I graduated with a BA in Law from Oxford University (Worcester College) and have an MA in Criminal Justice and a PhD from Brunel University. After working for third sector organisations in India and the UK, in local government, and as a researcher for the Law Society and the Police Foundation, I have held academic posts at Brunel University, the University of Cape Town and Keele University. I was appointed as Professor of Criminology in the School of Sociology and Social Policy at Nottingham in July 2014.
Research Interests My current research interests are in crime, crime control and the development of criminology in post-apartheid South Africa. I am particularly interested in the development of southern perspectives on criminology in the South African context and, more broadly, on the decolonisation of criminology in both the UK and South Africa. My most recent work has been on the background to the shooting of 34 striking miners at Marikana in South Africa's North West Province on 16 August 2012. I have also done research and published on the role, governance and impact of police independent advisory groups in England and Wales.
Teaching and Learning I was Director of Education and Student Experience in the School of Sociology and Social Policy from August 2015 until January 2018 and retain a close interest in all aspects of teaching, learning, assessment and the student experience. I am particularly interested in theory and practice of decolonising the curriculum in criminology.
