Abstract
The requirement for production systems to automatically determine their configuration is becoming more prominent. Self-configuration in manufacturing deals with the capability of a production system to configure itself in response to changes in its environment or product requirement. An understanding of the capabilities required to achieve self-configuration allows systems to be evaluated for their readiness to realise this goal. This enables users to identify where technologies can be used, where gaps may be present in existing system and where developments should be prioritised. This paper introduces a novel level-based classification system for assessing self-configuration capability in production systems. The classification is organised into stages, each representing a distinct level of self-configuration maturity, allowing for a stage-wise transition towards complete self-configuration. The enablers, key approaches, applications, and challenges to adoption of self-configuration in manufacturing systems are explored. A practical industrial use-case leak testing system is presented to demonstrate the application of the classification, showcasing how specific levels and features of self-configuration are mapped to real-world production settings. The outcomes of this application provide insights into the effectiveness and readiness of production systems for self-configuration, highlighting actionable areas for system improvement. Additionally, the paper discusses future research directions, including potential developments in data management, interoperability, and real-time adaptability, which are essential for advancing autonomous manufacturing systems.
